Cathy O’Neil comes to Applied Stats!

We were lucky enough to have Cathy O’Neil (of mathbabe.org) present at Applied Stats last Wednesday. You can find the slides from Cathy’s talk here. The talk discussed the role of data science in industry and society more generally. As practitioners, even in academia, we can’t ignore the political and cultural ramifications of our models. In particular, our choices of evaluation metrics are almost inevitably political and time and context are crucial factors we can’t ignore. Our models have the potential to have impact the lives of millions in sometimes subtle and sometimes profound ways and we should be accordingly careful.
