Introduction

Encryption plays an integral role in our lives today. We type passwords whenever we wish to check our emails or Facebook pages. Our bank accounts are encrypted to keep our savings safe. Even the barcodes on many of the products we buy are examples of encrypted information. But encryption is not merely the product of modern times, and it existed long before the advent of the computer. The story of encryption is long and complex and, of course, saturated with secrecy. However, it is the goal of this website to decode some of this complex history by highlighting several key moments of encryption: the origins of secret language, the inventions of famous codes and ciphers, and the discovery of methods by which they were decoded. By the end, one should have a greater knowledge of cryptography and hopefully a greater understanding of how these methods of keeping knowledge hidden ended up with us today.
