4 units
1-3:30 pm

Andrea S Walsh

Students will examine the multiple and contradictory ways in which culture shapes social constructions of masculinity and femininity. From a sociological and historical perspective, students will address topics such as the relationship of culture to biology and social structure; sex-role socialization; the influence of education, work, and medicine on the meaning of gender; and especially the role of popular media culture, such as film, television, and advertising, in shaping concepts of femininity and masculinity.
