An examination of the distinctive modern European culture that emerged during the Enlightenment and the challenges to that culture in the 19th century. Will introduce the central texts and figures who defined the meaning of modernity and the social and cultural foundations for the preference for market economies, representative political systems and social structures based on association, otherwise termed civil society.
