TIM HASLETT KNEW THE TIME
Strange week. Benefit for Scotty Hard tonight (see below) and tribute/bring-your-favorite-records night this coming Monday for Tim Haslett, who passed away over the weekend. Wayne Marshall, Flack, and special guest Brian Coleman will be playing "old records Tim loved" at WM and F's Beat Research night at the Enormous Room in Cambridge. Expect lots of Marley Marl, the Super Kids' "Tragedy" and many former WZBC/Other Music/Cambridge lurkers. More info here.
Schoolly-D, "C.I.A."
Fearless 4, "Dedication"
Jace has a nice post about Tim here. Tim was the only person I've ever met who could (1) argue that De La Soul destroyed hip-hop (a failed argument, but one he tediously maintained) and (2) start a sentence "Well, the Black Nationalist in me..." (he was not, by most definitions, black) and not have me reflexively run for the exits. He introduced me to Shitkatapult and Crooked Lettaz--equal citizens during his benevolent reign as buyer at Other Music Cambridge. He had illogically neat handwriting. He will be missed.
