Modern Political Philosophy

Major thinkers in Western political thought from Machiavelli to the present will be discussed, such as Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, and others. Themes to be stressed include: theories of the state; the development and varieties of liberalism and individualism; theories of community; the relations between politics and economics and between individual and state; and the problem of how to study political phenomena.
