A survey of British literature during the past 200 years, focusing on selected masterpieces from three periods: romantic poetry (Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats); Victorian fiction (Eliot's Middlemarch, Carroll's Alice books); and modernism (poems by Eliot, Yeats, Auden, and recent poets; novels by Woolf and Waugh; and plays by Beckett and Caryl Churchill). Attention will be given to cultural and thematic development, but the emphasis will be on the appreciation and interpretation of particular works.
