The CRL was created to save space for major research libraries by storing little-used materials. The CRL catalog contains periodicals, foreign and domestic newspapers, archival materials, US documents, foreign doctoral dissertations, and a wide range of materials for international studies.

Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace (Stanford University)
Best known for its archives, which pre-date the US National Archives by 15 years. Includes official files of the Okhrana, General Vrangel's papers, records of the interwar fascist, communist, and nationalist movements. Excellent poster collection. Partner with Rosarkhiv and Chadwyck-Healey in vast microfilm project, "Archives of the Soviet Communist Party and Soviet State." NB: Harvard also owns a complete set of these microfilms.

New York Public Library: Slavic and Baltic Division
Especially valuable for planning research trips. Extensive collection of early Slavic imprints, as well as pre-1860 manuscripts, books, and ephemera. Resources for study of emigrations to North America and Europe between 1918 and 1950. Thousands of original photographs, illustrated books, and plate books, including many designed by artists of the East European Futurist and Constructivist movements.
