Introduction to Literary Chinese

An introduction to the premodern literary language of China, based on close reading and translation of texts from the pre-Qin and Han eras. Readings include selections from Sima Qian's Shi ji, Mencius, Zhuangzi, and Han Feizi. Students of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese are all encouraged to enroll. Emphasis will be placed on grammatical analysis, cultural context, and vocabulary absorption (1000 characters). Classes conducted in English.
